      Sulfur‑autotrophic denitrification filter media are employed in denitrification processes, with elemental sulfur and iron‑based composite minerals serving as the filter material. In addition to capturing suspended pollutants, this composite media functions as a slow‑release electron donor, sustaining the attached autotrophic denitrifying bacteria and thereby achieving nitrogen removal. The selected composite material comprises two major types—those capable of producing acids and those capable of producing bases—during denitrification. By optimizing the composite ratio, the pH during the denitrification process can be maintained within an appropriate range, resulting in a high denitrification rate while meeting the effluent pH requirements for sulfur‑autotrophic denitrification filter media.

      Sulfur‑autotrophic denitrification is an autotrophic denitrification process that utilizes reduced sulfur as the electron donor. Chemolithoautotrophic and phototrophic sulfur‑oxidizing bacteria can, under anoxic or anaerobic conditions, employ reduced sulfur as an electron donor, generating energy through the oxidation of sulfur compounds while using nitrate as the electron acceptor to reduce it to nitrogen gas, thereby accomplishing autotrophic denitrification.
